From the Sublime to the Ridiculous

Yellow Admiral has had a really busy few weeks attending exhibitions in the UK and abroad. Firstly Simon Wakefield attended this year’s Defence & Security Equipment International (DSEi) exhibition at the Excel Centre in London. This exhibition hosts the world’s largest display of land, sea and air applications of defence and security products and technologies with over 1,000 exhibiting companies from 46 countries and including 30 national pavilions. Simon commented that he had made some interesting new contacts in the naval and security sector that he hopes will become clients in the near future.

Then Simon and Paul Miall, Yellow Admiral’s Sales Manager, spent a couple of days at the Southampton Boat Show. Although the recorded attendance at the show on the first weekend was well down compared to previous years there was a good buzz at the show and both Simon and Paul were kept busy meeting with existing and potential clients. Paul said “I was particularly pleased to meet some new UK clients with exciting expansion plans. We hear so much bad news at the moment that it is great when a company is brave enough to buck the trend and expand their workforce here in the UK.”

Simon went straight from Southampton to the Monaco Yacht Show as part of a Marine East trade mission. With over 100 superyachts (average length 44m) on show in Port Hercules in the Principality of Monaco the contrast with Southampton is huge - Simon commenting that it is hard not to stare open mouthed at the sheer opulence of these boats. Monaco is a must attend show for this sector and Yellow Admiral caught up with lots of existing clients as well as confirming a couple of new ones. Upon his return to the UK Simon concluded that there were still great opportunities for employment across these three diverse sectors of the marine industry and that there seemed to be a growing confidence across the industry in general.

Monaco Yacht Show 2011

A video report by Andrew Pinder of in association with Marine East, detailing the involvement of East of England businesses in the superyacht industry. While other areas of marine construction may be in the doldrums, the lucrative superyacht sector continues to flourish, and East Anglian companies with the enterprise and initiative to enter this market are prospering. Marine East has successfully organised a Market Visit for several of their members to next month’s Monaco Yacht Show. On September 21st and 22nd, delegates from the UK Eastern region will attend the long-running exhibition in Monaco’s scenic Port Hercules thanks to a Marine East initiative.
Now in its 20th year, the Monaco Yacht Show is a mainstay in the superyacht industry calendar, held in the yachting capital of the world.

Gary Williams, Marine East director and managing director of E-Tech Group, who will be exhibiting at the show, commented that the event is a must for all companies involved or wanting to get involved in the superyacht industry. “The Monaco Yacht Show is the most important of its kind and attracts visitors from all aspects of the superyacht world,” he said. “Everyone from billionaire owners, operators, management companies, equipment suppliers, naval architects & designers and those in between will be at the show. This trip is a great opportunity for Marine East members to scout the sheer scale of this luxurious and highly profitable market.”

For marine supply chain companies within the east of England, the superyacht industry offers potential for big business in the international market. East Anglian companies and members of Marine East E-Tech Group (QS105, Darse Sud), Servowatch (QS75, Darse Sud) and Bruntons Propellers (QS104, Darse Sud) will all be exhibiting.

Yellow Admiral managing director Simon Wakefield told Marine East that his decision to attend the event on the Market Visit initiative was simple. “The sheer scope of potential business available throughout this sector makes attending a must for me,” he said. “The Monaco Yacht Show is at the forefront of the superyacht sector, offering a rare and convenient chance to get up-to-date with industry goings on,” he added.

Marine East’s market visit will permit attendees the opportunity to assess their business prospects throughout the ultra-wealthy world of superyachts and to take in all that Monaco and this sector has to offer. Shaun Walton of Marine East said: “Marine East recognises that our members are constantly on the look-out for new business and expansion into new areas. We have organised this Market Visit with a view to help the companies attending establish a clear perspective of the superyacht market and their capacity for business within it. We hope that our visit to the Monaco Yacht Show will enable them to judge how and where they might fit in, or determine where new business can be created for the future.”

Yellow Admiral at Seawork Exhibition 2011

Yellow Admiral attended the recent Seawork 2011 exhibition in Southampton and as usual sponsored the Guinness Bar and held their daily raffle for a case of the black stuff!

The winners this year were Steven Foy of Suzuki GB Plc, James Fordham of Bucklers Hard Boat Builders Ltd and Nick Holland of Mastervolt UK. The prizes were presented by Laura Sandle on the recipients stands although Nick's prize was accepted on his behalf by Andy Parker who promised to pass it on untouched!

Laura commented that not only were the winners as pleased as ever to have won but the company also had a very successful show. "We signed up a number of new clients and also received new recruitment instructions for existing clients so we were pleased with the show. We were particularly pleased with the level of interest shown in our professional recruitment services by the renewable sector generally as this is now a really important part of our business" said Laura.
